Boiler Steam Flow Meter: Sourcing Multivariable Vortex High-Pressure Probes

Quick Answer: For boiler steam flow at pressures above 10 bar and temperatures above 180 °C, a multivariable vortex flow meter with an integrated high-pressure probe is a proven choice. It measures volumetric flow, pressure, and temperature from one pipe penetration and calculates mass flow for saturated or superheated steam. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these meters in DN15 to DN300 with 4-20 mA HART output and optional ATEX Zone 1 approval.

Why Boiler Steam Flow Needs Density Compensation

Boiler steam is not a simple liquid. Steam density changes with pressure and temperature. A flow meter that reads only velocity gives volumetric flow. That value means little for boiler efficiency or fuel cost. You need mass flow in kg/h or t/h. A multivariable vortex meter reads the vortex shedding frequency for velocity. Then the meter reads pressure and temperature using an integrated probe. The transmitter uses steam tables to calculate density and output mass flow.

Most engineers skip this part and order a basic vortex meter. Then they wonder why the boiler steam total does not match the feedwater total. The missing part is density compensation. For saturated steam, pressure compensation alone can work. For superheated steam, you need both pressure and temperature. The integrated probe removes the need for separate pressure transmitters and RTDs. That means fewer leak points and fewer pipe penetrations on high-pressure piping.

What the Multivariable High-Pressure Probe Actually Does

The high-pressure probe is the pressure and temperature sensor assembly inside the vortex meter body. In a typical boiler steam line the meter body is inline from DN15 to DN300. The probe sits in the flow path behind the bluff body. The probe has no moving parts. The pressure sensor is often piezo-resistive. The temperature sensor is a PT100. Both signals go to the transmitter. The transmitter calculates mass flow, standard volumetric flow, pressure, and temperature.

Silver Instruments offers these meters with 316L stainless steel bodies for standard steam service. For high temperature service up to 350 °C we use a high temperature sensor design and a remote transmitter if needed. For pressures above 40 bar we check the flange rating and sensor sealing. The standard model covers PN16, PN40, and PN63. Tell us the actual operating pressure, not just the boiler design pressure. Oversizing the pressure rating adds cost without reason.

Sizing Data We Need Before a Quote

Sourcing a multivariable vortex high-pressure probe starts with steam data. Boiler steam flow is not the same as water flow. The velocity range and density range are wider. Send us these values: pipe size in DN, pipe schedule or wall thickness, steam type saturated or superheated, operating pressure in bar, operating temperature in °C, minimum flow in kg/h, normal flow in kg/h, maximum flow in kg/h, and process connection type flange or wafer. Optional data includes ambient temperature, hazardous area classification, and whether you need a local display or remote electronics.

Send us your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range in kg/h. We reply with a model number, a dimensional drawing, and a price quote. If you have an existing orifice plate or DP flow meter, tell us the current pipe ID and the orifice bore. We can check whether a vortex meter will fit without pipe modification.

Installation Notes for High-Pressure Steam Lines

Straight run matters. A vortex meter needs a stable flow profile. For a boiler steam line, we recommend

at least 15D upstream and 5D downstream. If the meter is after a control valve, use 20D or more. Install the meter in a horizontal line with the electronics above the pipe for high temperature steam. This keeps the transmitter away from heat. For steam above 200 °C, we often suggest a remote transmitter or a high temperature neck. Do not install the meter on the bottom of a horizontal pipe. Condensate can collect there and cause a temperature error or a pressure tap blockage.

Last year a customer in Vietnam installed a DN80 meter on a 6 bar saturated steam line. Straight run was 18D upstream. The meter worked because the steam was dry enough. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A meter installed after a steam trap or in a wet steam pocket will read erratically. Vortex meters are not ideal for wet steam. If your boiler carries over water droplets, install a steam separator upstream. The high-pressure probe is not a magic fix for wet steam. It measures steam temperature and pressure, but the vortex shedding frequency becomes unstable when liquid droplets hit the bluff body.

Why Buy the Meter and Probe as One Unit

Some engineers ask if they can use a standard vortex meter and add separate pressure and temperature transmitters. They can. But the integration work falls on the control system. The flow computer or PLC must read three signals and perform density compensation. If the pressure transmitter drifts or the RTD is wired incorrectly, the mass flow value is wrong. A multivariable vortex meter does the calculation inside the transmitter. The factory calibrates the pressure and temperature sensors together. You get one data point for the control room. The probe is designed as part of the meter body, not a loose assembly. This reduces leak paths on high-pressure steam lines.

FAQ: Boiler Steam Flow Meter Sourcing Questions

Q: What is the maximum pressure and temperature for the multivariable vortex probe?
A: The standard version handles up to 40 bar and 350 °C. We can quote higher ratings if your boiler runs above this. Tell us the actual operating values and pipe size.

Q: Can this meter measure saturated and superheated steam?
A: Yes. The transmitter uses pressure and temperature compensation. For saturated steam, pressure compensation is enough. For superheated steam, both pressure and temperature are used.

Q: Does the meter need a separate flow computer?
A: No. The multivariable transmitter calculates mass flow, volumetric flow, pressure, and temperature. It outputs 4-20 mA HART with all variables available digitally.

Q: What pipe sizes do you supply?
A: We supply inline vortex meters from DN15 to DN300. Larger lines can use a reduced bore meter if the flow range allows. Send us your pipe size and flow range.

Q: Is the meter suitable for wet steam?
A: No vortex meter works well with wet steam. Use a steam separator upstream. The probe measures temperature and pressure, but liquid droplets will disturb the vortex signal.
