Flow Meter Adapter Fittings: Converting NPT, BSPP, and Flanged Pipe Connections Safely
Quick Answer: Adapter fittings connect a flow meter with one process connection to a pipe with another thread or flange standard. You must confirm thread type, size, pressure rating, and seal method before installation. Silver Automation Instruments supplies NPT, BSPP, and flanged adapter packages for magnetic flow meters, Coriolis mass flow meters, oval gear meters, and more.
Many flow meter replacements fail at the adapter stage. The meter itself may be correct for the flow range and fluid. The connection still leaks because NPT, BSPP, and flange standards are mixed. We have supplied flow meters to water utilities, chemical plants, and oil and gas skids across Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. This connection issue appears on almost every site with old piping.
Here is the thing. A 1/2 inch NPT thread and a 1/2 inch BSPP thread are not the same. They have different thread angles and different sealing geometry. If a technician installs one into the other, the thread may engage part of the way. The joint feels tight because the metal is binding. Under pressure, the joint leaks or the fitting cracks.
Why NPT and BSPP Are Not Interchangeable
NPT stands for National Pipe Taper. The thread is tapered and seals by thread deformation. You use PTFE tape or liquid sealant. BSPP stands for British Standard Pipe Parallel. The thread is parallel and does not seal on the thread. It seals with a bonded washer, O-ring, or flat gasket against a machined face. BSPT is British Standard Pipe Taper. It seals on the thread like NPT, but the thread angle is 55 degrees. NPT uses 60 degrees. The pitch also differs for most sizes.
Most engineers skip this part. They assume both threads are the same because the outer diameter is similar. We have seen food plants in Thailand cross-thread a stainless steel oval gear flow meter into a BSPP pipe. The line ran at 5 bar and 60 °C. After two weeks, product dripped from the joint. The meter was not faulty. The thread was wrong.
NPT Adapter Fittings for Flow Meters
NPT connections are common in North America, parts of Latin America, and some Middle East projects. They are also used on many fuel and oil skids built in Asia for export. Typical sizes are 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1.5 inch, and 2 inch. Always check the pressure rating of the adapter body. A 316 stainless steel NPT adapter can handle up to 200 bar at 20 °C. A brass adapter may be limited to 60 bar or less.
If your flow meter has NPT threads and your pipe is BSPP, specify a hex nipple or adapter bushing with one NPT male and one BSPP male. Use a sealant only on the NPT side. The BSPP side needs a bonded washer or O-ring. Do not wrap PTFE tape over a BSPP parallel thread. The tape will not seal correctly and the fitting may crack under load.
BSPP and BSPT Adapter Fittings
BSPP is widely used in Southeast Asia, Australia, and many water and wastewater plants. Malaysia and Singapore often specify DN15, DN25, and DN40 magnetic flow meters with BSPP ends. If the pipe is NPT, you need an adapter. If the pipe is BSPT, you need a thread style conversion and the correct seal.
A customer in Australia needed a DN25 electromagnetic flow meter with BSPP male ends to connect to an existing NPT female branch. We supplied a 316L adapter pair with EPDM bonded seals. The water line runs at 8 bar and 45 °C. No leak after 14 months. That is the goal.
Flanged Pipe
Connection Conversion

Flanged flow meters use different pressure and dimensional standards. ANSI 150, ANSI 300, DIN PN10, DIN PN16, DIN PN40, and JIS 10K are common. Two flanges may have the same nominal size but different bolt circles or raised face heights. You cannot force them.
Use an adapter spool or flange adapter plate. Specify the gasket material for your fluid. Use PTFE gaskets for acids and solvents. Use graphite spiral wound gaskets for steam. Use EPDM or Viton for water and food. A chemical distributor in Vietnam ordered a Coriolis mass flow meter with ANSI 150 flanges. Their pipe was DIN PN16. We built a short 316L adapter spool with one ANSI 150 raised face and one DIN PN16 drilling. Flow range was 0 to 1200 kg/h at 12 bar and 30 °C. This kept the meter original and avoided cutting the pipe.
How to Specify the Right Adapter Fitting
Send us the pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN or inches, and flow range. Also tell us the existing pipe connection and the flow meter connection. Our engineers check the thread type, flange standard, sealing method, and wetted material. We stock adapters in 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, PVC, and brass. We also match exotic materials for chemical injection and seawater applications.
Do not guess. One wrong adapter can cost a plant hours of downtime. For a water utility in Cebu, the difference between a DN25 BSPP adapter and a DN25 NPT adapter was small in price but large in risk. They sent photos of the old pipe and meter threads. We shipped the correct BSPP adapter package within four days.

Installation and Safety Notes
Depressurize and drain the line before you remove any fitting. Verify the thread type with a pitch gauge if there is any doubt. Clean the thread flanks. Use thread sealant only on tapered threads. Use new gaskets and O-rings for parallel threads and flanges. Tighten flange bolts in a cross pattern to avoid uneven load.
Never use a NPT male in a BSPP female on a pressure line. The male thread may thread in two or three turns. The connection may look acceptable. Under pressure, the joint can blow out sideways. We have seen this on customer sites many times. The repair cost was always higher than the correct adapter.
FAQ: Flow Meter Adapter Fittings
Can I connect NPT male to BSPP female? No. The thread angles and sealing methods are different. Use a proper NPT to BSPP adapter.
What is the maximum pressure for adapter fittings? It depends on material and size. A 316 stainless steel adapter can handle up to 200 bar at 20 °C. Always check the pressure class for your temperature.
Do flanged adapters need special gaskets? Yes. Select the gasket material for your fluid, temperature, and pressure. PTFE works for many chemicals. Graphite spiral wound works for high temperature steam.
Which adapter material should I choose? Match the pipe and flow meter body material. 316L covers most water, chemical, and food applications. PVC works for low pressure corrosive water. Carbon steel is common for oil and gas skids.
How fast can Silver Instruments quote an adapter package? Send the connection details. Our team usually responds within 24 hours. We ship to Southeast Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa.
