What is a Flow Meter? A Comprehensive Guide to Working Principles and Types

Quick Answer: A flow meter measures the volume or mass of liquid, gas, or steam moving through a pipe. Silver Automation Instruments supplies electromagnetic, Coriolis, ultrasonic, vortex, oval gear, and thermal mass flow meters for water, fuel, steam, chemical, and gas applications. To get a direct quote, send your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range.

A flow meter is a field instrument installed inline or clamp-on. It gives a signal that represents flow rate or total flow. In process plants, that signal is often 4-20 mA HART, pulse, or Modbus RTU. The right choice depends on the fluid, pipe size, pressure, temperature, and what the plant needs to control or record. Silver Automation Instruments works with end users and distributors in Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Most projects are 10 to 100 person SMEs in oil and gas, water and wastewater, chemical, food and beverage, and marine industries.

Flow Meter Working Principles

Different meters use different physics. Some measure velocity. Some measure mass directly. Others measure volume by displacement. The main types we supply are electromagnetic, Coriolis, ultrasonic, vortex, oval gear, and thermal mass. Most engineers skip the theory and go straight to the process data. In practice, the fluid type and the pipe size eliminate half of the options before you compare prices.

Electromagnetic Flow Meter

An electromagnetic flow meter works only with conductive liquids. It uses the Faraday principle. Two coils create a magnetic field. Electrodes pick up a voltage proportional to flow velocity. This works for water, wastewater, slurries, acids, and seawater. It does not work for diesel, oil, or gas because they are not conductive.

Recommended model: SIL-MAG electromagnetic flow meter. Typical specs are DN15 to DN2000, PTFE or rubber liner, stainless steel or titanium electrodes, accuracy 0.2 percent to 0.5 percent, and outputs 4-20 mA HART, pulse, or Modbus. A seawater flow meter for a desalination plant usually needs titanium electrodes and a PTFE liner. We supplied this exact configuration to a customer in Vietnam for a DN150 line at 6 bar and 28 °C.

Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

A Coriolis mass flow meter measures mass directly. It also measures density and temperature at the same time. This is useful for chemical dosing, fuel oil measurement, food ingredients, and high accuracy custody transfer. It handles liquids and some gases. It is less affected by viscosity changes than other meter types.

Recommended model: SIL-CMF Coriolis mass flow meter. Common ranges are 0 to 300 kg/h up to 0 to 100 t/h. Accuracy can be 0.1 percent for liquids. Process connections are usually DN10 to DN200. Pressure ratings go up to 100 bar or higher. We see this meter often on palm oil, molasses, and LPG applications in Southeast Asia.

Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Ultrasonic flow meters come in two main types. Clamp-on meters mount outside the pipe. Inline meters use transducers inserted in the flow. Transit time ultrasonic meters work best on clean liquids with low solids or gas bubbles. They are common for water transfer, chilled water, seawater intake, and large pipes.

Recommended model: SIL-US ultrasonic flow meter. Pipe sizes from DN25 to DN3000. Temperature range from -40 °C to 160 °C. Accuracy is around 1.0 percent. Clamp-on models suit retrofits because no pipe cutting is needed.

Vortex Flow Meter

A vortex flow meter measures flow by counting vortices shed from a bluff body. It works with steam, gas, and low viscosity liquids. It is common on boilers, compressed air, natural gas, and saturated steam lines. It is not ideal for very low flow or high viscosity fluids.

Recommended model: SIL-VS vortex flow meter
