Asthma Management Tools: How to Use a Peak Flow Meter for Lung Health
Quick Answer: A peak flow meter measures how fast a person can push air out of the lungs. Doctors use that number to guide asthma treatment. Silver Automation Instruments does not sell medical peak flow meters. We supply industrial gas flow meters for calibration benches and medical device production lines.
Patients with asthma often keep a peak flow meter at home. They blow into the device once or twice a day. The reading shows the peak expiratory flow rate in liters per minute. A drop in that number can signal narrowing airways before symptoms appear. This early warning helps patients adjust medication under doctor guidance.
But this article is not a medical guide. It explains the basic use of a peak flow meter and then covers the industrial flow measurement side behind the device.
How to Use a Peak Flow Meter Step by Step
Here is the thing. The exact method can differ between devices. Most peak flow meters follow the same basic sequence.
First, stand up or sit up straight. Set the marker to the lowest number on the scale. Take a deep breath and fill the lungs completely. Put the mouthpiece between the teeth and close the lips around it. Do not block the mouthpiece with the tongue. Blow out as hard and fast as possible. Do not breathe out slowly. Read the number next to the marker. Repeat the test three times. Record the highest value of the three attempts.
Most asthma action plans use three zones. Green is 80 to 100 percent of personal best. Yellow is 50 to 79 percent. Red is below 50 percent. Patients should follow the plan given by their doctor. Do not use this article as medical advice.
Where Industrial Flow Instruments Fit
You may ask why an industrial flow meter company writes about a medical device. The reason is calibration. Medical peak flow meters must be checked against reference flow standards. Calibration labs and production lines for respiratory devices need traceable gas flow measurement. Silver Automation Instruments supplies that part of the chain.
For example, a medical device manufacturer in Vietnam asked us about a thermal mass flow meter for an airflow test bench. The line tests small flow rates from 5 L/min to 200 L/min. We recommended a thermal mass flow meter with 4-20 mA HART output and a stainless steel sensor. The reference device gives stable readings at 25 degrees Celsius and 1.5 bar air pressure. But most engineers skip the cleaning step. We did not.
In practice, a thermal mass flow meter works well for low air and oxygen flow rates. It reads mass flow directly in kg/h or standard liters per minute. It does not need temperature and pressure compensation for clean dry gas. For higher line sizes above DN25, an ultrasonic flow meter can handle wider turndown. For reference accuracy, some labs choose a Coriolis mass flow meter instead.
What to Send for a Quote
Send us the gas type, pressure in bar, temperature in degrees Celsius, pipe size in DN, and flow range. If the gas is oxygen, tell us. Oxygen service needs special cleaning and material checks. If the area has explosive gas, we need the ATEX zone. For Zone 1 we can supply ATEX certified instruments with 4-20 mA HART output.

Peak Flow Meter FAQ
1. Is a medical peak flow meter the same as an industrial flow meter?
No. A medical peak flow meter is a low cost mechanical device for single patient use. Industrial flow meters are process instruments with signal outputs, calibration certificates, and material traceability.
